Thousands of Fylde residents will soon find an exciting letter landing on their doormat, as the Council begins delivering the first official communications for its brand-new weekly food waste collection service from Monday 20 July. If you’re among the first phase of households to receive a letter, it means your new service is just around the corner.

The letters are the first step in bringing this fantastic new service to life for 10,000 households across the borough, confirming that caddies will be delivered ahead of collections beginning in autumn. Residents can expect a further information guide alongside their caddy delivery, which will confirm their personal collection start date and collection day – making it simple to know exactly when to get started.

The new service – backed by over £1 million in Government funding – will see kitchen and food scraps transformed into renewable energy through anaerobic digestion, rather than going to landfill. Collections will take place weekly on residents’ existing bin collection days, at no extra cost.

Councillor Michelle Morris, Lead Member for Customer and Operational Services, said: “We’re so pleased to be taking this next step and getting information out to our residents. If you receive a letter, it means your new food waste service is just around the corner – and we’re here to help every step of the way. I hope that all residents will get involved, as every food waste caddy makes a real difference – cutting down on landfill and turning everyday waste into renewable energy.”

Residents who would like to find out more or speak to the team in person are also welcome to visit one of our community engagement sessions taking place at locations across Fylde throughout the summer.

For full details about your new food waste collection service, including what can go in your caddy and how it all works, visit www.fylde.gov.uk/foodwaste.

Fylde Council has today responded to the Government’s announcement which brings radical change to the structure of local government in Lancashire.

Fylde, along with all other 11 district councils, will be abolished, as will the two unitary councils of Blackpool and Blackburn with Darwen. Nor will there be a county council of Lancashire. The Government have decided that Fylde, Blackpool and Wyre will form one new unitary council, to go live in 2028. The unitary councils are:

West Lancashire – made up of Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre

North Lancashire – made up of Lancaster, Preston and Ribble Valley

East Lancashire – made up of Blackburn with Darwen, Hyndburn, Rossendale, Pendle and Burnley

South Lancashire – made up of Chorley, South Ribble and West Lancashire

Councillor Karen Buckley, Leader of Fylde Council, said: “Fylde Council has been unambiguous from the outset that we did not support local government reorganisation for Lancashire. Our residents spoke clearly against this change, as they value our independence, our identity and the close relationship we have with our communities. Sound financial management and high-quality services is our strength. We remain debt free, as do Wyre Council, but that is about to change.

“Although this is not the route we would have chosen, Government has now taken a decision, and our responsibility is to protect Fylde’s interests as the process moves forward.

“Residents can be assured that Fylde’s voice will be heard clearly. We will work hard to secure the best possible outcome for our communities and to make sure the qualities that make Fylde special are not lost in the reorganisation process.

“Our priority is to safeguard services, ensure stability for residents and businesses, and maintain Fylde’s distinct character during the transition period. Fylde will work constructively with partners across the Fylde Coast while continuing to represent the borough’s interests robustly.”

Further information will be provided as Government releases more detail on the next steps and the timetable for transition.

Fylde Council is celebrating today after all seven of its nominated parks and gardens received a Green Flag Award – the borough’s best ever result since the scheme began.

Ashton Gardens, Elswick, Fairhaven Lake and Gardens, Lowther Gardens, Lytham War Memorial and Garden and Promenade Gardens have all retained their Green Flag status, while Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee Garden in St Annes – also known locally as Crescent Gardens – has been recognised for the very first time, having entered the competition this year. The garden’s success is thanks in no small part to the dedication of its Friends group, who work in partnership with the Council’s Ranger Service to care for and champion the site.

It comes as the internationally recognised standard for parks and green spaces celebrates its 30th anniversary.

Fylde’s award-winning sites are among a record-breaking 2,391 across the UK to achieve the award this year – a fantastic testament to the hard work, passion and dedication of the council’s parks teams, volunteers and partners who care for these green spaces, ensuring they are maintained to a high standard for residents and visitors to enjoy.

The results are being announced today at a special regional Green Flag Awards ceremony hosted at Lowther Pavilion Theatre & Gardens in Lytham – a first for the Fylde Coast – bringing together winning local authorities, environmental organisations and community groups from across the North West, Yorkshire and the Humber, and the North East.

Councillor Jayne Nixon, Lead Member for Tourism, Leisure and Culture at Fylde Council, said: “To see all seven of our nominated sites awarded Green Flag status is a brilliant achievement, and one the whole borough should be proud of. From Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee Garden earning recognition on its very first entry, to our much-loved Promenade Gardens retaining their status, this is a real reflection of the pride and dedication our teams put into these spaces every single day.

“To have these results announced right here in Fylde, at the Lowther Pavilion, makes the achievement even more special. I’d like to thank everyone involved – our parks staff, In Bloom volunteers, friends groups and partners – for making Fylde’s green spaces something we can all be proud of.”

Paul Todd MBE, Green Flag Award Manager at Keep Britain Tidy, added: “Parks are essential public spaces that support our wellbeing, our communities and our economy. Yet for millions of people, particularly in the most deprived areas, local parks simply don’t feel safe or welcoming.

“With public services under pressure, investing in parks is not a luxury, it’s a practical, preventative solution and one of the most visible ways to improve people’s quality of life.

“Fylde Council and its partners have shown what can be achieved when parks are properly supported and managed. As we celebrate 30 years of the Green Flag Award, we want every community to have access to green spaces like this that are safe, welcoming and maintained to a high standard.

“Congratulations to everyone involved.”

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under contract from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.

Community and voluntary organisations across Fylde could soon take on ownership and management of council-owned land and buildings, after Full Council approved a new Community Asset Transfer (CAT) Policy at its meeting on Tuesday 7 July.

The policy creates a clear, transparent framework for eligible community groups to apply to take on certain non-strategic Council assets, through long leases at nominal or peppercorn rents, where a strong case for community benefit can be made. It’s a significant step towards handing local people more control over the spaces and places that matter most to them.

Under the new policy, applications will be assessed on a range of factors, including proposed use, evidence of local need, proposed community benefit, financial sustainability and governance arrangements. Appropriate safeguards will ensure that transferred assets continue to be used for community benefit in the long term, and that the Council meets its legal and financial obligations throughout the process.

To support the policy, councillors also approved an amendment to the Council’s Land Transaction Procedure Rules, ensuring that community asset transfers are governed by the dedicated requirements of the new policy rather than procedures designed for conventional commercial land transactions.

Councillor Karen Buckley, Leader of Fylde Council, said: “This policy is about empowering our communities to shape their own futures. We know that local groups and organisations often have fantastic ideas for how spaces in their area could be used, and now we have a proper framework to help make that happen. By giving community organisations the opportunity to take on assets that might otherwise sit underused, we can unlock real social, economic and environmental benefits for people right across Fylde.”

Fylde Council has completed its annual review of the 2024–2028 Corporate Plan and confirmed strong progress as the organisation prepares for major changes to local government in Lancashire.

A Corporate Plan is the Council’s public roadmap. It explains what the Council is aiming to achieve, the improvements it wants to make, and how it will deliver services for residents and businesses. It guides day‑to‑day work and long‑term planning, and each year the Council reviews it to ensure it remains relevant, realistic and focused on what matters to the community.

This year’s review shows that 91% of the actions in the plan – 47 out of 52 – have been completed or are well underway. Two actions are no longer required or deliverable, and three have been carried forward into a refreshed set of priorities.

The updated plan also reflects the upcoming Local Government Reorganisation (LGR), which will create a new Lancashire unitary council ahead of 1 April 2028. The revisions set out how Fylde Council will continue providing high‑quality services throughout the transition while ensuring Fylde’s identity, priorities and ambitions are strongly represented in the formation of the new authority.

Despite a challenging year, including preparations for LGR, complex planning examinations linked to offshore wind infrastructure, and difficulties recruiting to specialist roles, the Council has maintained momentum. The revised Corporate Plan now includes additional actions to make sure Fylde continues to deliver for residents while playing a full and active role in shaping the new council.

Councillor Karen Buckley, Leader of Fylde Council, said: “This review demonstrates that Fylde Council remains firmly focused on delivering quality for our residents as we navigate changes to local government in Lancashire. Fylde is a unique and special place, and we are determined to protect what makes our borough so distinctive — from the character of our towns and villages to the quality of life our residents value. Throughout this transition we will continue with business as usual, and we will make sure the priorities of Fylde’s communities are promoted clearly and confidently in the imposition of any new unitary council.”

The revised Corporate Plan has been updated in line with the English Devolution and Community Empowerment Act 2026.

Read the revised Corporate Plan here.

A BioBlitz event held at Royal Lytham & St Annes has recorded an impressive 333 species, highlighting the rich biodiversity on the doorstep of Fylde’s coastline ahead of this summer’s AIG Women’s Open.

The third annual BioBlitz, held last month, brought together local wildlife experts, community groups and golf course staff to identify the diverse range of plants and animals found across the world-renowned links course. Activities included a bat walk, bird walk, moth recording session and beekeeping demonstration, with notable discoveries including a hedgehog, a Puss Moth and a Greenfinch, a red listed bird species.

The event was organised by The R&A as part of its work to demonstrate how golf courses can support wildlife while hosting world class sporting events. Royal Lytham & St Annes will welcome the world’s best players from Wednesday 29 July to Sunday 2 August, and the findings from the BioBlitz will help shape fan engagement during the Championship, including a dedicated Nature Trail and a ‘Giving Nature a Home’ activation delivered with Lancashire Wildlife Trust, focusing on red squirrel conservation.

Councillor Jayne Nixon, Lead Member for Tourism, Leisure and Culture, said: “It’s wonderful to see the natural heritage of our coastline celebrated on such a global stage. The AIG Women’s Open is a fantastic opportunity to show visitors that our area offers so much more than championship golf, and we are proud to support events that connect our community with the wildlife on our doorstep.”

Residents can find out more about the Nature Trail and wildlife activities during the AIG Women’s Open by visiting the event website here.

Fylde Council has submitted further representations to the Secretary of State regarding the Morgan and Morecambe Offshore Wind Farms Transmission Assets Development Consent Order (DCO), having reviewed all documents submitted since the examination closed on Friday 19 June.

The Council’s representations maintain that the applicants have “failed to meaningfully engage with the Council” throughout the process, and that the withdrawal of Morgan Offshore Wind Limited from the project creates significant delivery and enforcement risks. Whilst some progress has been made on certain matters, the Council remains concerned that the applicants are unable to fully explain how the development would come forward or justify its impacts – an uncertainty which it considers may underline many of the deficiencies identified to date.

The submission also formally presents the joint economic review undertaken by Fylde, Wyre and Lancashire Councils, which concludes that the proposed onshore transmission route could be up to £520 million more expensive than an alternative northern route via Rossall and Hillhouse. The review identifies significant national benefits associated with the alternative route, including 1,100 additional jobs and between £990 million and £1.7 billion in Gross Value Added, and finds there are “no insurmountable environmental or ecological challenges” to its delivery.

The Secretary of State has now published all representations received from interested parties ahead of an anticipated decision on Monday 14 September.

Councillor Karen Buckley, Leader of Fylde Council, said: “With a decision now anticipated in September, it is vital that the Secretary of State has the full picture before reaching any conclusions. The economic evidence is compelling, the concerns around delivery and enforcement remain unresolved, and the communities most affected by this development deserve to know that every option has been properly considered. We will continue to make the case as strongly as we can in the time that remains.”

Fylde Council is encouraging residents to make their voices heard in a major public consultation on a new waste strategy that will shape how rubbish and recycling is collected and managed across Lancashire for the next decade.

The Lancashire Waste Partnership’s draft strategy, ‘A Low Waste Lancashire 2026 to 2036’, sets out an ambitious vision for the future of waste collection, management and disposal services across the county. From Tuesday 30 June to Sunday 9 August, residents have the chance to share their views on the strategy’s vision, objectives and proposed actions – helping to ensure the final plan truly reflects what matters most to local communities.

Taking part couldn’t be easier – the online survey takes no more than ten minutes to complete, and every response will directly inform the final strategy, due to be published later in 2026. A summary and full draft of the strategy are also available to read ahead of completing the survey.

Councillor Michelle Morris, Lead Member for Customer and Operational Services, said: “We know how important an efficient waste collection is to our residents. This is a real opportunity for Fylde residents to help shape how waste is handled right across Lancashire for years to come. We want to hear from as many people as possible – your feedback genuinely makes a difference, so please do take ten minutes to have your say.”

Residents who need the survey in an alternative format are encouraged to get in touch with the Council directly.
