Fylde Council’s Executive Committee has approved plans to acquire Kirkham Pool from the YMCA for a nominal sum of £1, marking a vital step forward in securing swimming provision for the Fylde area.
The decision follows the withdrawal of Wave Reach CIC from the facility’s Disposal Plan process and demonstrates the Council’s commitment to maintaining vital leisure facilities across the region.
Councillor Jayne Nixon, Lead Member for Tourism, Leisure and Culture, commented: “This approval signifies an important milestone in our efforts to preserve swimming provision in rural Fylde. While we recognise the challenges ahead, including the need to secure funding for refurbishment, we are committed to exploring all practical options to ensure the pool’s sustainable future.”
In a strategic move to enhance swimming provision across Fylde, the Council is currently procuring the new operational contract for St Annes Pool. This will now incorporate Kirkham Pool, providing the funding for the Kirkham pool refurbishment plan is secured, enabling potential operators to bid for the management of both facilities and promoting operational efficiency.
The final transfer of the facility remains subject to the outcome of an updated condition survey, which will be presented at the next committee meeting on 17 February 2025.
