Fylde Council announces the retirement of Darren Bell, Head of Technical Services, following over two decades of distinguished service.
Darren joined Fylde Council in 2003 as Parks Manager, where he oversaw the modernisation and redevelopment of Fylde’s parks, securing £2 million funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to restore Ashton Gardens.
In 2008, Darren was promoted to Head of Leisure Services, where he led several transformative projects. These included the successful transfer of Lowther Pavilion to the Lowther Trust, securing funding to refurbish the St Annes Swimming Pool, and obtaining an additional £2 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund for the restoration of Fairhaven Lake.
After becoming Head of Technical Services in 2017, Darren oversaw the £22 million restoration of Fairhaven Sea Defences, managed major schemes within the Council’s Capital programme, and led initiatives on surface water management and bathing water quality. Throughout his career, he has championed apprenticeships and managed multidisciplinary teams while serving as a strategic lead on the development of Council assets.
Councillor Karen Buckley, Leader of Fylde Council, commented: “Darren’s contribution to Fylde has been exceptional. His vision and dedication have transformed our public spaces, from the restoration of Ashton Gardens to the improvements at Fairhaven Lake. The projects he has delivered will benefit residents and visitors for generations to come, and we wish him the very best in his retirement.”
Councillor Tommy Threlfall, Lead Member for Environment, who worked closely with Darren on the Fairhaven Sea Defences project, commented: “The sea defence works at Fairhaven represent one of the most significant infrastructure projects in Fylde’s recent history. Darren’s leadership ensured this complex scheme was delivered to the highest standards, and his expertise and commitment to excellence will be greatly missed.”
Allan Oldfield, Chief Executive of Fylde Council, said: “Darren’s career at Fylde Council has been marked by continuous achievement and innovation. The parks and sea defences that stand today are a testament to his vision and technical expertise, and his legacy will continue to benefit Fylde residents for years to come. Darren’s dry humour and insight will be irreplaceable, and I wish him all the best for a very long and prosperous retirement.”
Reflecting on his career, Darren added: “It has been a privilege to serve the people of Fylde for over 20 years. I am particularly proud of our achievements in restoring Ashton Gardens and Fairhaven Lake, which have become cherished community assets. I leave knowing that Fylde Council remains committed to enhancing our public spaces and protecting our natural environment for future generations.”
