Air pollution can have a significant effect on both human health and the environment. For this reason, local authorities have a legal duty under the Environment Act 1995 to assess and manage air quality in their areas. These assessments are measured against health-based standards known as the National Air Quality Objectives, which are set by the UK Government.
In Fylde, we monitor local air quality and report our findings regularly and submit Annual Status Reports which are published annually and can be accessed here. The report assesses current pollution levels and considers how local developments, such as new housing, road schemes, or changes in industrial activity, might affect air quality. Our report is reviewed by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), which may recommend further investigations or actions.
If our monitoring or assessments indicate that one or more of the National Air Quality Objectives are unlikely to be met, we are required to declare an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA). Once an AQMA is declared, we develop and implement an Air Quality Action Plan aimed at improving air quality in that area.
