Fylde Council is calling on residents to share their views on proposed changes to local government that could reshape how services are delivered across Lancashire.

The Government has announced plans to replace the current two-tier system of County and Borough/District Councils with new ‘unitary’ authorities. If implemented, this would mean that all 15 existing councils in Lancashire will be abolished. Parish and Town Councils will remain.

Following careful consideration, Fylde Council expressed opposition to the reorganisation. Council Leader Cllr Karen Buckley stated, “We believe the current system works well for Fylde, keeping services close to our communities and preserving our strong local identity.

“We deliver quality services, demonstrated year on year by residents’ positive satisfaction ratings; we maintain our parks to award winning standards; we organise much loved significant events to boost our towns, while enhancing and protecting what matters most to people. All of this is achieved debt free because of our strong financial management.”

Despite local opposition, the Government has signalled its intent to proceed with reforms by the end of this Parliament, strengthening legislation and ruling out a referendum.

To ensure Fylde’s voice is heard, residents are invited to participate in a public engagement survey commissioned by Lancashire’s councils. The survey seeks input on service priorities and how any new arrangements should reflect Fylde’s unique character.

How to Take Part

  • Complete the survey online at https://new.fylde.gov.uk/LGR
  • Call at the Town Hall or your local library to complete the survey
  • Request a postal survey by calling 01253 658658

Deadline: 28 September 2025

Fylde Council will publish the results and use them to represent residents’ interests throughout the reorganisation process.
