Surrounding Lytham and St Anne’s, this unspoiled scenery should not be missed. You’ll find hamlets, small villages and market towns each one with their own attraction and many tracing back hundreds of years. Kirkham, the largest of the rural towns has many interesting things to offer.
They hold their local market every Thursday and located near by is the local history museum which out lines the town’s past as far back as Roman Times. The town received a Manor charter in 1296 and there is a church on site as early as 640AD. Recorded in the Doomsday Book, Singleton is known as ‘the model village of the Fylde’. It is home to a late nineteenth century church and fire engine house, both are Grade ll listed buildings.
Why not go to ‘Glasform’ and watch traditional glass being blown from sand into attractive art pieces. Each of the quaint villages within the Fylde countryside has its own special heritage. Weeton-with-Preese, an ancient village, is the site of a Bronze Age archaeological find, Elswick’s original 17th century non-conformist chapel is the oldest in Lancashire and the remains of a 17th century Post Mill at Warton is a listed Building of Historical Interest. Fylde’s ‘windmill’ connection is very strong as well as in Staining where 200-year-old examples, originally used to grind corn are now beautiful homes.
There are also tastefully converted barns and restored thatched cottages in Treales, Roseacre and Wharles. Freckleton, one of the oldest villages is host to the largest annual amateur music festival in the country whilst Clifton and Salwick Canal provide a perfect setting for delightful walks. Westby-with-Plumpton and Thistleton have their roots firmly in the agricultural community and the quaint village green and duck pond and Wrea Green all add to the charm within rural Fylde.
Visit Newton with Scales with its traditional public houses, which you will find show excellent hospitality and Little Eccleston boasts a hotel renowned for its real ale and own brewery.
