Lytham Disability Football Tournament a huge success

29 teams from England, Scotland, Wales and for the first time Ireland, came to Lytham to play the 11th Lytham Disability Football Tournament.

The main sponsor for the event was McDonald’s who kindly delivered free drinks and fruit bags for the entire competition. Generous donations were received from Lytham Round Table, The Richard J Wilson Sports Foundation and Peter S Corkhill which helped towards the cost of running the tournament.

Teams were divided in 5 groups of 6 teams judging by the abilities. After the round robin in the morning, the afternoon knock-out games decided the finals. The results were as follows:

Group 1:

  • Wrexham A (Wal) 1 – 0 Oadby & Wigston A (Eng)
  • Inter St Annes A 1 -2 Wrexham

Group 2:

  • Bradford City C (Eng) 2 – 3 Wrexham C (Wal)
  • Inter St Annes B 0 -2 Glentoran (Irl)

Group 3:

  • Wrexham B (Wal) 2 – 0 Doncaster Titans B (Eng)

Group 4:

  • Danby Rovers A (Eng) 3 – 0 City Knights A (Eng)

Group 5:

  • Bradford City A (Eng) 1 – 0 South Tyneside A (Eng)

It was an extraordinary success and most of the teams have booked to play again for the 2020 tournament.

Talks are taking place for Italian, German and Austrian teams to play next year for next year and hopes are high to have some of these countries attending the tournament.

Every year a cup or trophy is presented to every single player in the finals. Every team receives a cup and all players receive a medal.

The cups and trophies are all recycled, and with the help of some very generous nice people at the Recycling Centre as well as other members of the public, the organiser Luca Lanzani I collects, cleans and restores everything he can.

Luca said: “The tournament was once again a huge success this year and I want to personally thank everyone for taking part, as well as everyone who helps make this happen. From the generous sponsors, to the individuals who help with the organising, this wouldn’t be possible without you. Every year the tournament grows, and I cannot wait to see what next year’s brings.”
