Fylde Council is encouraging residents, businesses and community groups to have their say on proposals to reorganise local government in Lancashire.

From Thursday 5 February until Thursday 26 March, the UK Government is running a consultation on Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) in Lancashire, as required by law.

The proposals would replace the current two-tier system of district and county councils with fewer, larger unitary councils, where all local authority services are delivered by a single authority. Lancashire is one of 21 areas in England where this change is planned.

Of the available options, Fylde Council is supporting a three-unitary council proposal for Lancashire, which would bring together Fylde, Blackpool, Wyre and Lancaster to form a new authority representing around 500,000 residents. This option unites areas with shared interests in tourism, transport, energy, industry and coastal management.

Councillor Karen Buckley, Leader of Fylde Council, said: “Fylde Council opposed local government reorganisation but the Government is pressing ahead. This consultation is an important opportunity for our residents to share their views on the five proposals being considered.

“If reorganisation goes ahead, the three‑unitary option offers the best fit for Fylde. A Coastal Lancashire unitary works because it brings together places with shared coastal priorities, shared economic strengths and shared infrastructure needs. Including Lancaster strengthens the model even further – adding a major university, a diverse visitor economy, strategic energy assets and a balanced economic base that benefits the whole area.

“The alternative models either group together areas with little in common or fragment Lancashire too far, risking weaker services and less strategic capacity.”

Residents can complete an online survey here. Paper copies are also available at libraries across Lancashire.

The consultation closes at 11:59pm on Thursday 26 March 2026.
