Fylde Council is pleased to announce the extension of its commercial recycling service to support local businesses in meeting new statutory requirements under the Government’s ‘Simpler Recycling’ initiative.

From April 2025, businesses with 10 or more full-time employees are legally required to separate recyclable materials from general waste as part of phase one of the national Waste Reform programme introduced by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. The initiative aims to increase the national recycling rate from 50% to 65% by 2035.

The Council’s enhanced commercial recycling service will provide separate collections for paper, cardboard, plastics, cans and glass through dedicated wheeled bins. Businesses will benefit from reduced disposal costs, with recycling charges set at £50 per tonne compared to £186 per tonne for general waste disposal.

Councillor Michelle Morris, Lead Member for Customer and Operational Services, commented: “This enhanced recycling service demonstrates our commitment to supporting local businesses whilst advancing our environmental responsibilities. By making recycling simpler and more accessible, we are helping businesses comply with new legislation while contributing to our community’s sustainability goals. The service can be delivered within existing resources, ensuring cost-effective support for our local businesses.”

The service will be extended to micro businesses with fewer than 10 full-time employees by 31 March 2027, in accordance with statutory guidance. Commercial food waste collections will be introduced when the household food waste service launches in 2026.

Eligible businesses will be contacted directly by Council officers who will provide comprehensive support during the transition to the new recycling service, including promotional materials, guidance literature and direct assistance.

The initiative supports Fylde Council’s corporate commitments to quality services, a clean and green environment, and a vibrant and healthy economy, whilst helping achieve national recycling targets.
