Fylde Council has announced the approval of £289,678 in final capital expenditure to complete the shopfront and property improvements in Kirkham town centre under the Kirkham Futures Programme. The programme, made possible through the £6.29 million Future High Street Fund (FHSF) award and £3.27 million High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) funding, is transforming Kirkham into a more vibrant and welcoming destination, with this latest allocation set to further enhance the town centre.
Since its launch, the Kirkham Futures Programme has seen over 25 shopfronts and properties revitalised, with initial funding grants of up to 90%, later adjusted to 80% due to high demand. Each project was carefully designed and overseen by a dedicated team of consultants, including North West Design Collective (NWDC), Joseph Boniface Architects, and DC & MG Associates, who have worked in close collaboration with Kirkham businesses and landlords to ensure high-quality outcomes that reflect Kirkham’s heritage and community aspirations.
Leader of Fylde Council, Councillor Karen Buckley, had this to say on the project’s progress: “The regeneration of Kirkham town centre has been a key part of Fylde Council’s vision for a thriving community space. The Kirkham Futures Programme is demonstrating how investment in heritage, local businesses, and infrastructure can positively impact the town. This latest funding allocation brings us closer to completing a transformation that reflects Kirkham’s character and potential.”
The remaining funds will support three additional shopfront improvement projects on Poulton Street and provide targeted grants for several prominent vacant or occupied properties in the area. Following competitive tendering, Fylde Council has chosen Rosslee Construction to deliver the final shopfront improvements, set to include updated signage and statutory approvals. Fylde Council’s architectural team will continue to support these projects through design services, with grants covering up to 80% of the costs and property owners contributing 20% as part of the commitment to revitalising the area.
The construction phase is scheduled from October 2024 through March 2025, with projects set to complete before the March 2025 FHSF deadline. This initiative reinforces Fylde Council’s commitment to creating a welcoming and prosperous town centre for the Kirkham community and visitors alike.
