Fylde Council is pleased to announce the successful ongoing refurbishment of a Grade II listed building acquired in April 2022, funded through the Future High Street Fund (FHSF). The Former Charity Girls’ School on Poulton Street has a total funding package of £920,051 which has been allocated for the acquisition and conversion of this historic property, marking a significant investment in the revitalization of Kirkham town centre.

In April 2024, Rosslee Construction, a renowned Lancashire-based contractor, was appointed to commence refurbishment works on the property. The project has been progressing extremely well, with a new extension to the rear currently under construction. This vital project is on track to be completed as planned by November 2024.

Councillor Karen Buckley, Fylde Council Leader said: “I am delighted to see this project taking shape.  It represents a significant investment in Kirkham’s future bringing back to life a much-loved historic building in the heart of the town.

“Once refurbished, the property will be made available as a bar/restaurant on a new lease arrangement, representing an exciting opportunity that will contribute to the local economy and the vibrant community atmosphere of Kirkham whilst creating new employment opportunities.”

Interested parties are invited to register their interest in the tenancy opportunity by contacting the Kirkham Futures team at kirkhamfutures@fylde.gov.uk.

Fylde Council anticipates that upon occupancy, the project has the potential to create up to 5 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs, further supporting local employment and economic growth.

Michael Clarkson, Managing Director at Rosslee Construction said: “The construction programme is progressing well and we are delighted to be involved in the revitalization of this historic building and Kirkham town centre, working alongside local architect DC&MG Associates and supporting the local economy through our social value enterprises.

“We are looking forward to completing a successful project for the benefit of the local community.”

He added: “As part of our commitment to giving back to the community, we are delighted to announce a £500 donation to Grow Kirkham which is a local charity.

“Additionally, we will be offering work experience to a decorating student later in the contract, providing valuable on-the-job training and experience. We will be sharing updates on these initiatives on our social media channels in due course.”

Emma Illingworth, Project Architect at DC & MG Associates said: “As Kirkham architects, we are proud to be involved with the design and restoration of this historic listed building in the heart of Kirkham.

Working with the Regeneration team at Fylde Council, and Rosslee Construction is proving to be a great partnership where all are working together to realise the potential of this opportunity.

The modern extension to the rear has increased the size and flexibility of the internal space and renovation works have exposed original features.

It is a positive step, that an empty but important building is being restored and brought back in to use. This offers a fantastic opportunity for someone to establish their business in a prominent building on Kirkham’s high street”.
