A project to enhance and protect Liggard Brook and Main Drain using nature-based solutions is now underway.
Earlier this year United Utilities announced a significant investment of £3 million in nature-based solutions (NBS) across Lancashire. As part of this initiative, work has started around Liggard Brook to address local environmental challenges.
The Ribble River Trust, one of the three organisations benefiting from the United Utilities funding, has received £1 million to implement Nature Based Solutions (NBS) projects. Of this allocation, £189,000 is specifically earmarked for surveys, analysis, assessment, engagement, and solution development for both Main Drain and Liggard Brook.
These NBS projects aim to deliver sustainable benefits, including natural flood management. By working closely with landowners and utilising Countryside Stewardship grants, the Trust seeks to protect and improve the environment within the Ribble River catchment.
The Ribble River Trust has recently completed initial surveys of Main Drain and Liggard Brook. The findings from these will be used to develop practical and sustainable solutions that address the unique needs of these watercourses. The Trust will also engage with stakeholders to ensure that these solutions align with local priorities and concerns.
United Utilities is also providing additional support to fund vegetation clearance at its site on Liggard Brook. Iain Pilling, Area Engagement Lead for Lancashire explained: “The stretch of brook close to our site has a lot of vegetation in the water. We’re working with the Environment Agency to ensure this can be safely removed in order to improve the flow. The work will be carried out by The Environment Agency’s specialist contractors.
“This work should also help alleviate the problem with mosquitos in that area. We’re also working with Fylde Council to identify trees which can be thinned out further downstream to improve the brook’s overall ecological health and improve flows.”
Cllr Tommy Threlfall, Lead Member for Environment, said: “I’m thrilled to see United Utilities and the Ribble River Trust investing in the health of Liggard Brook. As a local councillor, I know how important this waterway is to our community. These nature-based solutions will not only help protect from flooding but will also enhance the biodiversity and beauty of our area. I’m eager to see the positive impact of these projects, after many months of negotiations with those who can make a difference, it seems there is light at the end of the tunnel.”
