In September 2024, Fylde Council started to work with BDP (Building Design Partnership) to develop a comprehensive Climate Change Strategy and Implementation Plan for the Borough. BDP is an international, multidisciplinary practice of built environment professionals known for its collaborative approach and strong focus on sustainability and innovation in their projects.
This factsheet is intended to explain the development process of the strategy and the key role it plays in creating a greener future for Fylde. It includes a Microsoft form link at the end of the document which enables people to express their opinion or provide information.
Who
This initiative is being led by Fylde Council in collaboration with BDP. It involves an engagement process with the following key stakeholders:
- Lead Members & Council Members
- Fylde Council Senior Management team (CEO, Deputy CEO, CFO and Heads of Service)
- Fylde Council Officers for relevant service areas (Planning Policy, Housing Services, Environmental Health Services, Bereavement Services, Waste and Fleet Services, Tourism and Cultural Services, IT, Facilities Management, etc)
- Neighbouring councils, including Blackpool Council, Wyre Council, and Lancashire County Council
- Wider Fylde Council Employees
- Fylde Council Supply Chain
- Residents of Fylde
What
The Strategy will outline how the Council plans to tackle the climate crisis and identify the roles and responsibilities of individuals and departments within the Council needed to achieve these objectives. The key objectives for this project are as follows:
- Understand the Council’s current initiatives and commitments related to climate change, including identifying and addressing data gaps.
- Engage with Council Members and key stakeholders to gather input and raise awareness.
- Identify and prioritize areas for emission reduction and wider sustainability performance.
- Develop specific objectives and actions across key areas such as energy, carbon, water transport, waste, biodiversity, and climate change adaptation/mitigation.
- Produce a comprehensive climate change strategy with defined goals, measurable actions, and a detailed Implementation Plan outlining timelines and responsibilities. The strategy will primarily focus on initiatives that concern the Council’s internal operations, as these fall within their direct sphere of influence and are therefore more feasible to implement.
When
The project started in September 2024, and the final report is expected by Spring 2025.
How
The strategy is fully funded by Fylde’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund allocation. To ensure the strategy and implementation plan is appropriate and based on accurate information relating to the Council’s existing operations and future ambition, an engagement process is being carried out with the various stakeholders mentioned above. This is so BDP can understand the interests and priorities of each.
Why
In June 2019, the UK was the first major economy to set a legally binding commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. The UK also recently announced a new target at the UN Climate Change Conference COP29 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 81% by 2035 compared to 1990 levels (replacing the previous pledge of 78% by 2035). By setting a climate change strategy, Fylde Council will contribute to achieving these ambitious climate targets and create a more resilient, sustainable, and prosperous future for its residents.
