Loneliness can affect anyone, of any age, gender or background, at any time. Research has shown that loneliness increases the likelihood of early mortality and poor physical health, in addition to putting individuals at greater risk of anxiety and depression.

We’re taking action to help reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation across the Fylde coast. In partnership with Wyre Council, Fylde Council is delivering a new befriending service, aiming to recruit volunteers who are able and willing to offer support and spend time with lonely and isolated residents. Befriending volunteers will be able to offer companionship to those most in need in our communities.

Volunteers can help someone to improve their health and wellbeing, by accompanying them on a walk, visiting a community group together or enjoying a cup of tea and chat. There will be the opportunity to talk over the phone or meet up in person, each offering meaningful connections. Something as simple as chatting together can make a significant difference and brighten the day of someone who is socially isolated.
