Young residents across Fylde are launching exciting careers thanks to a transformative apprenticeship programme that’s connecting local talent with fantastic opportunities at businesses throughout the borough.
Since April 2024, AFC Fylde Community Foundation has been delivering life-changing support to unemployed people in Fylde, helping them secure apprenticeships with local employers. Through dedicated one-to-one mentoring and strong partnerships with businesses across all sectors, the programme has already placed 20 apprentices into employment with 16 local businesses, creating a brighter future for young people while helping employers find the talented staff they need.
The success story of Liana perfectly captures the programme’s impact. After being referred to the Fylde Focus programme, Liana received personalised mentoring that identified her passion for childcare. Foundation staff connected her with Stepping Stones Nursery in Kirkham, provided mock interview practice to build her confidence, and helped her secure an Early Years Practitioner Apprentice position starting in October. She has now begun a Level 2 qualification with Blackpool and Fylde College, turning her ambition into reality.
Councillor Karen Buckley, Leader of Fylde Council, said: “This programme is transforming lives across our borough. Every apprentice we support represents a family seeing their young person thrive, a local business gaining motivated talent and our community growing stronger. Liana’s journey demonstrates the opportunities available to launch a new career by working whilst training, and with no tuition fees or debt.”
Chris Brannigan, Chief Executive Officer of AFC Fylde Community Foundation, added: “Our apprenticeship programme in partnership with Fylde Council has been incredibly successful and is all about investing in local talent and strengthening the Fylde economy. By working closely with Fylde-based employers, we create meaningful opportunities for residents to gain skills, experience, and long-term employment.”
The programme, funded through Fylde’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund allocation, continues accepting referrals seeking apprenticeship opportunities. Working alongside prestigious partners including the University of Lancashire, Blackpool and Fylde College, and The Growth Company, the Foundation ensures participants access high-quality training that leads to sustainable careers.
