Clifton Street in Lytham is set to be transformed after Councillors approved £292,495 to install new heritage-style lighting, alongside specialist tree care to enhance the street scene, support the town centre environment and contribute positively to the local economy.
Executive Committee members gave the green light to replace 26 ageing lighting columns with elegant new designs featuring ornate infill panels that celebrate Lytham’s rich history. Each column will showcase the Clifton family crest alongside oak and elm leaves, creating a distinctive streetscape that pays homage to the area’s heritage and natural character.
Adding to their appeal, the new columns will also include practical features such as bracket arms for colourful banners and hanging baskets, plus power sockets at their base, helping to create an even more vibrant and welcoming atmosphere for residents, visitors and local businesses throughout the year.
Following an arboriculture report earlier this year, the Council made the decision to retain Clifton Street’s London Plane trees. Now, 28 of these cherished trees will receive specialist care, subject to landowner permissions, from expert arborists to ensure they continue to flourish and provide the leafy canopy that makes Clifton Street so special.
Councillor Karen Buckley, Leader of Fylde Council, said: “This is a bold and beautiful investment in the heart of Lytham. The new lighting will not only brighten our streets but celebrate our town’s heritage with elegance and pride. Combined with expert care for our much-loved trees, this project will create a welcoming, characterful space that supports local businesses and invites people to linger, shop and enjoy. It’s about honouring our past while investing in our future.”
Works on the trees will begin in early 2026, with the lighting installation to follow.
