Poulton Street in Kirkham is set to reopen early next week for Festive shopping, drinks and dining following works carried out under the Kirkham Futures Public Realm Scheme.
The road is currently closed from the junction with Clegg Street to the junction with Church Street, Freckleton Street, Kirkgate and Preston Street.
The plan was to resurface the highway and re-open December 10th, however, after analysis of test bore holes along Poulton Street, which could only be carried out and assessed this week, the Highways Authority Lancashire County Council have instructed additional work to the sub-surface that would add at least a week to the planned work resulting in a closure of the main street until Christmas week.

The additional highway work is necessary to ensure an appropriate high-quality scheme, to ignore the technical advice could result in significant issues with the highway soon after the public realm works have been completed, adding cost and inconvenience to the businesses and residents of Kirkham.
All partners agreed that to extend the current road closure into Christmas week was not acceptable, the businesses and residents of Kirkham must have the opportunity to eat, drink and shop local this Christmas.

The instruction has been given to bring the current road closure to an end early next week, allowing Poulton Street, Kirkgate, Church Street, Freckleton Street and Preston Street to reopen to traffic. The businesses will have an additional weekend without the road being closed in the crucial run up to Christmas.
Every effort will be made to reduce the extent of temporary traffic lights during this period. Works will continue to the footways in Poulton Street, Kirkgate, Freckleton Street and Preston Street alongside carriageway works in Church Street and Birley Street and the new structures, paving and planting to Market Square. However, works carried out whilst the road is closed until early next week will remove the need to have four-way temporary lights.

To carry out the more substantial works to the carriageway required by Lancashire County Council an application for a road closure early in the New Year will be made. when the impact on businesses and residents is expected to be considerably less.

Partners are committed to delivering a high-quality development for Kirkham and value the support that has been evident throughout the programme. It is hoped that this decision helps the town to have a successful Christmas period.

Further information on the future road closure will be shared in due course.

Read on for our “Elf and Safety” tips!

Christmas Gifts

It is important to ensure gifts such as household appliances, electricals, toys and cosmetics, etc, are safe for use. The purchase of products displaying the CE Marking from known suppliers is a good start. Be aware of scams, fraud and cheap imitations which could be unsafe, compare products on a “like for like” basis, check product warnings and instructions on use, and be aware of any product recalls. Advice is available on product safety from the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/consumer-product-safety-advice-for-staying-safe

Christmas Lights and Candles

Always follow manufacturer’s instructions. Check wiring, fuses and bulbs, and look out for loose wires. Check light sets are suitable for your intended use (indoor/outdoor use). External lighting sets must be fitted safely and connected to an RCD protected socket. Do not leave lights on overnight or overload electrical sockets. Keep lights away from flammable materials of surfaces. Place candles on a secure base or in a receptacle suitable for the purpose. Never leave candles unattended and extinguish candles and tea lights before bed.

Christmas Cooking

Avoid cooking your turkey overnight. Switch off cooking appliances when unsupervised. Ensure all cooking equipment (such as a deep fat fryer) is fitted with a thermostatic control. Position pan handles in a manner that cannot be knocked off the stove. Ensure tea towels and clothing are kept well away from heat sources. Supervise children at all times and keep them away from cooking areas.

General Safety Tips – Not Just for Christmas!

Household Appliances: Never leave a washing machine, dishwasher or tumble dyer operating overnight. Avoid leaving appliances on electrical standby overnight.

Portable Heaters: Secure heaters at a location away from curtains or other flammable textiles (such as cushions and throws). Do not use to dry clothes.

Electrical Blankets: Always unplug an electrical blanket before getting into bed. Store flat and never rolled when out of use. Follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions.

Smoking: Never smoke in bed. Use a proper ashtray. Never leave a lit cigarette unattended.

Fire Alarms: Ensure fire alarms are fitted and tested on a monthly basis. Consider whether you can provide additional equipment such as a fire blanket or fire extinguisher that can be used in the event of a fire. Plan the safest route of escape and be as prepared as possible in the unlikely event of a fire breaking out.

For further information on fire safety in the home, speak to your local fire service and see current advice available: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/make-your-home-safe-from-fire/fire-safety-in-the-home-accessible-version

Fylde Council have lodged objections with elements of the proposed Morgan and Morecambe Offshore Wind Farm plans during a statutory consultation conducted by the developer.

The developer’s pre-application consultation on the transmission assets associated with the Morgan and Morecambe Offshore Wind Farms closed on 23 November 2023. Fylde Council has given very careful consideration to the information contained in the consultation material and resolved to raise objections to several aspects of the proposal, as well as expressing concern that the consultation took place ahead of many details of the proposed scheme being finalised.

Cllr Tommy Threlfall, Lead Member for the Environment at Fylde Council, commented: “I am hugely disappointed, both in the plans outlined and the degree to which the consultation failed to involve the community. The locations of the consultation venues and the details provided were wholly inadequate, particularly the absence of an event in Freckleton, an issue I had raised in September. Freckleton’s farming and residential communities stand to be greatly affected by the plans as described, yet they were left out of these discussions.

“I spoke to many people who were able to attend the sessions which did take place, and the consensus opinion was almost wholly negative. Residents left the consultations more confused than they arrived, describing the detail as poor, and noting the lack of clarity.”

A full copy of Fylde Council’s consultation reply can be found on the Fylde Council website here: https://new.fylde.gov.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/windfarm-consultation-response.pdf

Selnet Ltd have published a Feasibility and Baseline Study, made possible by funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, to provide the Council with a better understanding of the Voluntary, Community, Faith and Social Enterprise (VCFSE) sectors in Fylde.

The study found that 120 active groups sit within Fylde’s VCFSE community and provides clear evidence that these organisations make a significant contribution to the Borough, preventing need, reducing hardship, supporting those in crisis and driving social values.

This is crucial, as individuals across the country are currently facing significant economic pressures. As a result, the VCFSE sector, a lifeline to many Fylde residents, is facing some very challenging circumstances, with increased costs, increased demand on services and loss of staff and volunteers, all cited in the report as just some of the issues impacting their work.

The findings of the study will help the Council and other partners to understand how these organisations contribute to the local economy, how we work together now, and how they can be better supported in the future to ensure that the residents of Fylde continue to benefit.

Cllr Karen Buckley, Leader of Fylde Council, said: “The work of our local VCSFE groups is invaluable, and identifying the barriers these organisations face is essential in overcoming them. We are deeply grateful to all those groups who participated in the study, both for helping us better understand the sector and for their efforts in supporting their communities.”

The UK Shared Prosperity Fund is a central pillar of the UK government’s Levelling Up agenda and provides £2.6 billion of funding for local investment by March 2025.
The National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme is well-established and operated by The Food Standards Agency in partnership with Fylde Council.
This Christmas market provides the perfect opportunity for attendees to find unique gifts and indulge in festive treats.

Organisers at the Kirkham Business Group are thrilled to bring together such a comprehensive line-up of activities and stalls, ensuring that the Kirkham Christmas event will be a memorable and joyous occasion for the entire community.

Heidi Hopkinson, owner of Serendipity and member of the Kirkham Christmas Lights Committee said: “We are thrilled to bring the magic of the season to our town through the Kirkham Christmas event.

The enchanting town of St. Anne’s on the Sea is set to sparkle and shine as the annual Christmas Lights switch-on returns to the town centre on Saturday 25th of November.

The eagerly anticipated event, organised by the Community and Neighbourhood working group (CAN) – the event and community arm of St. Anne’s on the Sea Town Council – promises to be a day filled with festive delights for the entire community.

Santa Claus himself will be making appearances in the satellite shopping areas, spreading joy and delivering presents to local children. The Santa tour is scheduled to take place between 12 noon and 3.00pm, ensuring that the magic of Christmas is felt throughout the town.

As the day progresses, the Amphitheatre will come alive with the spirit of the season as Churches Together hosts a heartwarming nativity ceremony and carol singing from 3pm onwards. Families are invited to join this cherished tradition and share in the warmth of the Christmas story.

The main stage will then burst into musical celebration from 4.00pm to 5.45pm, featuring performances by local community groups, schools, and talented performers.

This prelude sets the stage for the grand finale – the Christmas Lights switch-on at 5.45pm, when residents and visitors can witness the town centre transform into a twinkling wonderland as the festive lights illuminate the night sky.

Kevin Martin, Town Clerk for St. Anne’s on the Sea Town Council, said: “We are thrilled to bring this joyous occasion to St Annes and grateful for the support of our sponsors, volunteers and the entire community that makes it possible.

“Residents and visitors are encouraged to mark their calendars and join in the festivities on the 25th of November for a day of merriment, music, and the magical illumination of St Annes Christmas lights.”

Cllr Karen Harrison, Chair of Community and Neighbourhood working group (CAN), added: I am delighted to illuminate St Annes with the spirit of unity and joy this festive season. Our community-focused Christmas light switch-on symbolises the warmth and togetherness that define our town and I am sure everyone will have a wonderful time.

Cllr Karen Buckley, Leader of Fylde Council, expressed her enthusiasm for the event, stating, “The St Annes Christmas Lights Switch On has become a highlight in our community calendar, bringing together families and neighbors to celebrate the magic of the season. It’s a wonderful testament to the spirit of togetherness that defines our town.”

Councillor Jayne Nixon, Lead Member for Tourism, Leisure and Culture at Fylde Council, added, “The investment by the Town Council into the Christmas Lights display is a significant contribution to creating a festive atmosphere that delights residents and visitors alike.

Representatives from over 60 Fylde volunteering organisations attended the two receptions on Monday 30 October and Friday 17 November, where the Mayor, Leader and the Deputy Leader of the Council both praised their wonderful work.

These events were the second series of volunteer recognition receptions this year following earlier receptions in January.

Cllr Cheryl Little, the Mayor of Fylde, said: “It was our pleasure to be able to host these receptions giving our volunteer groups well-earned praise and appreciation. Fylde is beyond fortunate to be home to so many caring and generous people, and it’s only fitting that we take time to recognise everything they give for their communities.

“So not only from myself but also on behalf of Fylde residents, this is a small appreciation in recognition of the positive difference volunteers make with their fantastic attitude and relentless commitment. It is the primary reason Fylde is a great place to live, work, and visit!”

Cllr Karen Buckley, Leader of Fylde Council, added: “On behalf of Fylde Council, I’d like to say ‘thank you’ for the generosity and hard work of our volunteers, whether they pick litter to keep our beaches clean, work at the food banks to help vulnerable people stay fed, or look after our beautiful green spaces, and everything else in between. The volunteering community in Fylde is exceptional, and we are delighted to offer a reception as a small token of our gratitude both to say thank you in person and offer a chance to get to know one another.”

The Community Projects Fund support projects that promote or enhance the environment, encourage cohesive communities or promote the economy.
The new features are the results of a partnership between Fylde Council, Jon Nichol, and Joanne Hargreaves-Doherty from Doherty’s Destiny. The specialist suicide bereavement charity based in Cleveleys raised £1112 towards the cost of the materials and installation through a generously patronised fundraiser.

The talking bench is the seventh placed by Doherty’s Destiny across the Fylde coast, giving people a place to find comfort and support in a tranquil setting. The Letters to Heaven post box is the second associated with the charity, with the first present at Carleton Crematorium in Wyre, and provides a special opportunity for people to express their deepest emotions and sentiments to their lost loved ones through the healing act of sending letters.

The ceremony on Monday 13 November was attended by Cllr Chris Dixon, Fylde Council’s Lead Member for Social Wellbeing; Joanne Hargreaves-Doherty, the founder of Doherty’s Destiny; Jon Nichol of Doherty’s Destiny, responsible for the creation of the Letters to Heaven post box; and Samantha Southern, who lost her husband Glen Southern to suicide. Glen is commemorated by this new talking bench, which as the seventh placed by Doherty’s Destiny, also marks seven years since the loss of Joanne’s son James Doherty to suicide.

Jon and Joanne spoke movingly about their own experiences of losing loved ones to suicide before unveiling the talking bench and the post box to applause from those assembled. At the climax of the ceremony, Jon and Samantha released three doves symbolic of the Trinity, provided by Karen Mankowska of Little Dove Tails Dove Release.

Also in attendance was Lisa Westoby, the local resident who along with Jon Nichol initially approached Lytham Crematorium about installing a talking bench and letters to heaven post box like those at Carleton Crematorium. Lisa, who also sadly lost her husband Toby to suicide, was passionate in ensuring this community project went ahead. Toby is commemorated by a talking bench donated by Doherty’s Destiny at Fairhaven Lake.

Cllr Chris Dixon said: “To be bereaved by suicide is a circumstance many would never imagine finding themselves, and while we all hope never to be affected, it is vital to provide support for those who are. Bereaved people – particularly those bereaved by suicide – are at far greater risk of suicide themselves, and we are glad to be able to offer the community an opportunity to reach out for the help they need, either from a talk with a stranger, a heartfelt letter to the departed, or access to local resources.”

Jon Nichol said: “The ‘Letters to Heaven’ post box will provide a unique opportunity for individuals to communicate and express their thoughts, deepest emotions, feelings, and messages to their lost loved ones.

“The simple act of writing and sending letters can offer a profound sense of healing and connection during the grieving process. The post box will be a sacred space for everyone within our community to use.”
