On Monday 24 June, Fylde Council commemorated the start of Armed Forces Week 2024 with a flag raising ceremony attended by elected members including the Mayor of Fylde, Fylde Council’s Chief Executive Officer Allan Oldfield, and Lee Townsend, Royal British Legion Chair for St Annes, Lytham and Warton.

Armed Forces Week is an opportunity for the nation to show its support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from current serving troops to armed forces families, Veterans and Cadets.

The Armed Forces Flag was presented to the Mayor by David Cam DL, Under Sheriff of Lancashire, and was raised at the Town Hall in St Annes in a ceremony taking place on Monday morning.

Fylde Council was recently recognised by the Ministry of Defence Employer Recognition Scheme for their support to Defence and the wider Armed Forces community, and are one of forty-seven organisations across the North West of England to receive a Silver Award this year.

Paul Deacon, Technical Enforcement Officer and Armed Forces Officer for Fylde Council, said: “On behalf of Fylde Council, I am delighted that we have received the silver award. As one of eight Veterans employed by the council, I would like to thank all those who have supported our successful application. This award demonstrates Fylde Council’s commitment to support our Armed Forces community including those who work for the council.”

The Employer Recognition Scheme was launched to reward employers who support Defence People objectives and to encourage others to do the same. This includes employing serving and former members of the Armed Forces community, and demonstrating flexibility towards training and mobilisation commitments for Reservists and Cadet Force Adult Volunteers.
